We’re seeing a flood of “Earth-friendly” products as the market for green goods increases to meet demand. Unfortunately, many of these products mislead consumers into paying more for a single-use item with little to no environmental benefit. Terms such as “biodegradable, recyclable, eco-friendly, earth friendly” are free to use without additional scrutiny.

Thankfully,  there is a defense against “greenwashing”: CERTIFIED COMPOSTABLE. Manufacturers must obtain a 3rd party certification in order to display “Certified Compostable”. That is why this is what we require to include in our piles.  We will also accept anything labelled ASTM D6400 – the current U.S. standard for biodegradation by compost. If an item advertises that it meets ASTM D6400 standards, then a team of scientists has confirmed that the item breaks down into organic compounds within a set time period when in an industrial composting setting.  Most certifications meet this standard, so to keep an eye out for common certification labels:
